물 카고, 기름 카고

서아프리카 베냉 출신 작가 하조우메는 사람들의 일상생활에서 어떤 쓰임새를 갖고 있는 사물의 물질성과 질감을 가지고 작업 한다. 그는 그 사물을 만지고 변형함으로써 정신적이면서도 정치적인 의미를 부여할 수 있다.

그는 “배움의 정원”에 작품을 설치하기 위해 자기 나라에서 두 대의 스쿠터를 가져왔다. 나이지리아에서 토고까지 휘발유를 밀수하려고 특수 제작된 것이라고 한다. 운전자가 다리를 뻗기에는 너무나 비좁은 이 스쿠터는 장애인들이 만든 것으로, 암거래된 것이다. 운전자들이 방해를 받지 않고 국경을 넘을 수 있도록 기름 탱크의 용량은 최대한으로 키워졌고, 엔진 과열을 방지하기 위해 통풍이 잘 되는 구두창으로 탱크 마개를 여러 개 만들어 달았다.

아주 즉흥적이면서도 정교한 기계 개조 덕분에 스쿠터는 생기를 지닌 사물로 변신했다. 녹이 슨 금속 방패를 지닌 괴물같은 벌레가 된 그 스쿠터의 양쪽에 날개 같은 것이 덧붙여졌다. 그 날개에는 베냉에서 휘발유를 팔 때 사용하는 유리병이나 물을 뜰 때 사용하는 검은 비닐들이 달려있는데, 그것들은 서로 균형을 유지하고 있다. 우리는 현대를 살아가는데 필요한 휘발유라는 ‘액체’가 우리의 삶을 가동시키는 ‘액체’와 다르지 않다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 그리고 베냉의 거리 풍경과 시장을 보여주는 두 장의 파노라마 사진이 이 설치작품을 마무리한다.

Water Cargo & Petrol Cargo

Hazoumé, an artist from Bénin (West Africa), works with the materiality and texture of objects that play a role in people’s daily lives.

By touching and transforming these objects, he infuses them with spiritual and political significance.

For his installation in “Garden of Learning”, Hazoumé procured two motor scooters, both the kind people in his home country build specially for the purpose of smuggling petrol from Nigeria to Togo. With almost no legroom for the driver, this black market trade counts many disabled people among its protagonists.

The fuel tank capacity has been pushed to a maximum so that drivers can pass from border to border without stopping, and the multiple tank caps made of shoe soles are direly needed if the annealing machine

is to stay ventilated.

These highly improvised and sophisticated technical alterations turn the scooter into something of an animated object: a kind of monstrous insect with a rusty metal shield, to which the artist has added wing-like extensions on both sides.

Balancing on these wings are either balance glass bottles – such as the ones used to sell petrol in Bénin – or the black plastic bags used to scoop water for drinking. Thus, the liquid that fuels our modern lives is equated with the liquid that fuels all life.

The installation is completed by two panoramic shots of street scenes and markets in Bénin.
